World TB day - Scaling horizons with homoeopathy.

By Dr. Gajanan Dhanipkar

Tuberculosis as understood by modern medicine and homoeopathy

Though the disease has common symptoms, just as modern medicine sees, apart from this homoeopathy also sees how the individual reacts to the illness, his emotion state, physical state, aggravations, amelioration and the seat of the disease. When we see these together we conclude on the individuality, how this individual responded to the affection of tuberculosis apart from the infection per se. By doing this we get an edge and have a deeper understanding and have remedies which work much deeper to get the disease under control.

What should the patient expect from homoeopathic treatment?

When the treatment starts, all patients first want is relief, the symptoms that they are suffering from, their fever has to go down, their appetite that was reduced should come up. the weight loss that they are going through should stop. This is the first thing that should happen to the patient once homoeopathy is started. Apart from that a general well being starts, a feeling of being better, the mood, the emotions, those things also start returning to normal in a much healthier way. What is also seen is that the effect of the allopathic medicines that you are taking also withers off. So when you are treating cases of tuberculosis with homoeopathy, you see minimum suffering and maximum relief that comes to the patient.

Use of homoeopathy alongwith allopathy

This can never be ruled out as we are praticing with modern day medicine. The patients that come to us are already on allopathic treatment for tuberculosis. Now a days there is a new strain called MDR TB or the multi-drug resistant tuberculosis, what we see as a challenge to the medical fraternity as such. Here homoeopathy has much to offer for those patients who have not got relief with the standard line of treatment for MDR TB. When we see the patient differently and get the individuality, distinct compared to what we are treating the tuberculosis on protocol basis. When we are doing this, the remedies that we find, first helps in reducing the effects he is suffering of the allopathic medicines and if the patient is not responding and when you give homoeopathy alongwith allopathy, the improvement is much faster. This has been a regular experience in practise.

Experience of treating cases of tuberculosis with homoeopathy

We have lot of instances where in we have cases of multi drug resistant tuberculosis coming to us. I can share few experiences, a young boy who was around 18-20 years of age. He developed multi drug resistant tuberculosis due to taking irregular medicines. When we took his case and started homoeopathic treatment he came with recurrent abscess and fever. When we started homoeopahtic treatment for him, the first change that we saw in him was the episode of fever had completely reduced, he started gaining appetite, the weight which was going down started remaining constant. Over a few months the abscess returned and then over a few months, they subsided again. Over a period of year, with allopathic treatment and homoeopathic treatment continued together the patient stabilised, the X-Ray and sputum came back to normal and the patient lived healthily live thereafter. Another case i am telling you was a case of pleural effusion where the patient was completely normal, suddenly developed effusion due to some immune response and was diagnosed of having tuberculosis. Here the case taking was completely homoeopathic where we chose a remedy according to the organ affect, the side affected and the individuality of the person and the effusion got minimised and the patient was relieved after few months of treatment. Another case i wish to share with you was a case of tuberculoma of the brain. The patient came to us for convulsions because of the tubercluoma that she had in the past because of tuberculosis. The patient was being treated for convulsions to which the patient was responding only partially. After considering her past history of tuberculosis and when we gave medicines considering both, past history of tuberculosis and convulsions, the tuberculoma disappeared, the convulsions stopped, allopathic medicines were discontinued afterwards and the patient was healthy hereafter. The cases we treat now a days, most of them are drug resistant tuerculosis, the patient is not responding to allopathic medications. We come in there and then get the things back to normal. What i feel is that in such cases, when there is a crisis, the patient is on allopathy, you can have homoeopathic treatment in conjunction with allopathy to get the patient out much faster and in a healthier way. So we have a lot of work to do together in cases of tuberculosis per se.

Summary

Earlier we used to think, 10 years back, that tuberculosis is not there in our country. But now if you see the present scenario, we all homoeopaths and allopaths should think together that we require to join hands in treatment of tuberculosis. In cases of treating of tuberculosis, the homoeopathic approach always adds an edge towards the well being of the patient. So considering both treatments together will help mankind to get out of this dreaded disease much faster. And it is a healthier way as it minismises the side effects and the well being returns much faster. So I feel that working for tuberculosis, we all need to join hands to fight this dreaded disease.

CASE RECEIVING AND ANALYSIS - WRITE TO GET CURED

By Dr. Vasudha Vij, BHMS, CCAH, Resident doctor at the other song Clinic – Care Beyond Compare

One of the efficient ways of expressing oneself is through writing. It allows you to expresses yourself as a person. It also helps you move easily among inferences, facts and your opinions. It stimulates you to extend a line of thought beyond your first impressions .

Writing out your ideas permits you to evaluate the adequacy and out sketch of your personal feeling.

Homoeopathy deals with individualization; knowing the person within and outside; which includes the feelings, dreams, fears, perceptions, reactions of an individual. And for identifying patient and reaching the core of the patient we have a proper case taking process that assist us to reach our destination.

Every person is different and every individual has her/his own fashion of expression. Some can express themselves by talking but some cannot whereas some can express better by writing than by talking. Hence it is beneficial for patients to fill a case record form.

Filling up the case record form is an integral part of homoeopathic treatment. It is constructive process, both for the physician and the patient. If filled adequately, it would guide physician to understand the individual and her/his sufferings.

ADVANTAGES OF CASE RECORD FORM

  1. Patients who cannot express themselves verbally or those who cannot talk can make themselves understood better by writing.
  2. Patients who are comatose, new born babies (parents can fill up specialized form designed for children) and specially abled individuals.
  3. There is also a special page allotted for patients to express themselves by doodling.
  4. The form provides a very good window into the patient's conscious and subconscious story. And many times important clues of the most sensitive issues in the case, which our doctors can focus and zoom into.

We wish to help our patients in the best way possible, CRA form being one of the primary modes of starting treatment at the other song

Kidney stones and homoeopathy - A smooth passage for the rough times

By Dr. Pankil Dhruv (BHMS, C.C.A.H, F.C.A.H)

Kidney stones are the third most common affliction of the urinary tract. Urine has all the ingredients that form the stone, but all these ideally pass through without our knowledge. When there is an imbalance in any of these substances, the crystals cluster together into stones. The size of the stone can be as small as a grain of sand to one as large as the size of a tennis ball.  Up to 98% of urinary tract stones with size less than 5 mm in diameter, especially in the distal ureter, pass spontaneously. Stones of size greater than that almost always require surgical intervention. Shock wave lithotripsy is recommended as the first line of conventional treatment but in all such cases Homoeopathic treatment has its scope and if arrived at the suitable remedy then it can work wonders!

Let us understand it with the help of a case

A 32 yr old female came to me with complaint of severe pain in abdomen and back, pain was shifting type, she was in severe agony and frequent urge to urinate. She had high degree of pain before urination. Associated with acidity and indigestion mostly in evening hours, says no appetite these days due to pain in flanks. She describes pain as wave like and sudden sparkling pain. There as burning before urination, vomiting severe episodes with pain.

Her CT scan revealed multiple calculus, report as follows:

She had history of recurrent stones, so investigated further

Her blood reports showed: Increased uric acid and PTH(parathyroid hormone) levels, and many calculi in both kidneys.

These are due to faulty metabolism, she had this history of renal stones 2 years back. She had already been to other doctor who had prescribed homoeopathic medicines. So in this case I took more of the background history as the complaint was due to metabolic disorder. When I probed further in her case, I was expecting some stressful situation.

I found that she had issue at her work place and at home. Her situation was she needs stability in her work where she feels lack of confidence, feels her opinion is not valued. work is not appreciated, fear before new assignment, timid in public to share her opinion but would weep easily in front of all. Also had history of ovarian cyst and fibroid. She has allergic rhinitis with every season change.

Whenever the problem is at the level of metabolism, remedy needs to be selected on the basis of totality.

Considering the case in totality, suitable homoeopathic medication was given to the patient along with dietary avice

In a week’s time she called up in morning and said to visit urgently, she had passed stones!

Multiple stone were passed in morning with severe pain while urinating and there were frequent episodes for urinating where in she passed many stones.

Below are images of multiple stones which the patient passed after starting homoeopathic treatment.

Other photos of series of patients who passed such kidney stones (size ranging from 0.4 cm to 1 cm) after homoeopathic treatment

General management along with treatment:

1. Fluid intake should he high at all times mostly at bed time.

2. I also advice patients to use barley water which helps in flushing out the stones.
3. Avoidance of milk, cheese and great deal of calcium should be advised.
4. Vitamin D should be stopped or used in very low quantity.
5. Eggs, meat and fish are high in sulphur containing proteins and should be stopped in patients with cystinuria.

Homeopathic treatments for Kidney stone act as an effective, natural and alternative way, and also helps in preventing the recurrence of kidney stones.

Life is tough my darling...but so are you

By. Dr. Meghna Shah, Dean, the other song - International Academy of Advanced Homoeopathy

It has been a while since I started working, around 16 - 17 years, I would say. We all have our own reasons to adopt our own career. For some, it comes from a financial need, for some it comes as an option/choice, and for some it emerges out of pure passion to contribute and grow in their respective fields

While many working women are in a good position, where sufficient help is available to them, for many more it is a monumental struggle. Single handedly or with minimal help, they have to strike a balance between the house and work. However in both circumstances, i personally feel that it is a remarkable feat for all working professional to juggle between the two poles and keep it going.

As we are told that time is the best teacher, and with maneuvering through the odds, we develop our own ways for effective harmony between work and home.

Now a days, with the world at our finger tips(thanks to the smart phone era) so many self-help guidelines and tips are available. However, there is a twist to everything that sets in with experience, which is what I wanted to share with my dear readers.

  • Set your goals. For some individuals it may come easy, but some may need guidance. Do not shy away from it. Consult someone you trust. Have a long term career plan. It is quite possible that things may may not move the way you designed, but to have a road map always helps you stay on track and not get strayed into the wilderness.
  • Prioritize, and learn to say 'no' without feeling guilty about it. Just communicate it properly with the right reasons.
  • Be flexible and adaptable. I personally feel that it helps great deal to have a certain degree of adaptability and flexibility in order to feel less stressed, worries and anxious, and then the subsequent consequences.
  • Planning is vital to success. Plan your schedule well in advance, right from the menu for the week or if you need to run an errand; have a comprehensive shopping list to avoid missing out on anything. One of the challenges of the urban lifestyle is a race against time so make the best use of it.
  • I strongly advocate and endorse healthy eating. This includes more of whole food plant based with plenty of fruit, minimal processed food, with loads of water, every day. Please include some form of exercise into your daily regime, which is a must. Go for a walk, or go to the gym or do yoga. Choose any physical activity that suits your taste and makes you happy.
  • Start investing in the right places. Consult and agent and start early. Keep a periodic check on the progress. If you have doubts, consult a family member, close friend, trusted colleague.
  • Stay updated with the latest developments around you, in the city, in the country and also in the world. In the age of smart phones, it is very simple and quick.
  • Go for regular health check ups, especially if you are over 40. Diseases do not arrive knocking your door, and prevention is always better than cure. If you have to consult a physician for any health concerns, do it at the right time and follow up regularly. Never neglect your health. Keeping healthy and fit is your priority.
  • Indulge in or cultivate a hobby/activity that makes you happy and fulfilled. It is never too late for anything; so do not let your age be an excuse to deprive you from the happiness you deserve.
  • Both men and women are equally important with their individual strengths and weaknesses. Both genders deserve their due, their rights and position in society. While women are accepted for the forebearing, submissive and condoning attitude, we should mileage it as our strength and not weakness.
  • Maintain your dignity and self respect. People will throw jibes or take digs at you, try to pull you down, but only if the person matters, one should attempt reconciliation. If the person is of no importance, simply forget it. That person's actions are irrelevant. Do not consume your good energy into anything futile.

Lastly, a wise person once advised me that, "Your happiness is in your hands."
This simple phrase immediately got stuck in my mind and when I feel low, hopeless and consumed by the ever increasing demands of life, I simply rewind and play this message, which immediately peps me up. I hope it will help you too.
