The way to your child is through you

By Dr. Devang Shah, MD(Hom)

It is a task in itself to deal with children who have behavioral difficulties. It pushes the parents and often the doctor to fringe of anger. What we will be discussing in this article are the ways and means to effectively deal with these problems. Here is a case of an 11 year old girl with major problems were here behavior and hyperactivity. She did not care for her marks, was stubborn, angry and least interested in studies. She would do exactly the opposite of what her mother asked her to do. She had now developed a habit of telling lies. This had a deep impact on the mother and this is how the mother brought her to seek my opinion.

Her case was taken and a suitable homoeopathic medicine was chosen. The mother would complain about the child during every follow up. There was an element of disease but it was magnified in the mother’s perception. Every time the child was scolded by her teacher, the mother would say the following things to the child,

You are careless
You are irresponsible
You don’t know how to behave
You are not studying well

The mother may or may not have been aware, but she was sending a message that, ‘you are a problem.’ It affects the child’s ego. This can either lead to rebellious attitude or withdrawal of the child into its own world. Both are detrimental to the progress of the child.

The question is how to correct this situation?

The best way perhaps is to tell the child that, ‘I am affected every time the teacher scolds you’. Here we are shifting the object of focus from ‘you’ to ‘I’. You are conveying your sensitivity to the child and the child gradually develops sensitivity towards your feelings. I had to spend hours explaining this to the mother after each consultation till she could apply this in her day to day life.

The child was given an appropriate homoeopathic remedy and the mother was counseled every time to not give the “you” message and both these things worked complementary to each another. The child improved; her concentration got better; fights between mother and daughter reduced significantly. Now when the teacher scolds her she feels it is for her own good and she is no longer careless about the scolding. She beautifully said that, ‘the criticizing teacher is my best teacher now.’ As a healer, it was such a joy to hear this. The child and the parent are now a happy unit. Seeing this level of transformation is immensely satisfying to the physician; as a healer.

As Ralph Waldo Emerson says,
"To laugh often and love much; to win the respect of intelligent persons and the affection of children; to earn the approbation of honest citizens and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to give of one’s self; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived—this is to have succeeded."

Listening - the art of healing beyond pills

By Dr Devang Shah, MD(Hom)

Despite of best of efforts made by parents, it is difficult to get everything right with children. Doctors often receive complaints of children not listening, becoming introvert, fearful, not studying etc. here we need to understand if the child’s behavior is causing any harm to the people around it, to itself or it lies a small area which called as a ‘no problem zone’.

Let me share the case of a teenage girl who was brought to the other song for homoeopathic consultation to treat physical illnesses. This case was difficult as there was little to nothing that this girl shared with me. I had to rely on the mother’s observation to treat this case. Given my warm and welcoming nature, my patients often share a lot with me. But in 8 years of practice, this was one of the few times that it was next to impossible to get any information from a patient. But the good part was that after a long wait of three years, she started sharing in bits and pieces her thoughts and emotions. Her physical complaints got better but her state of mind remained the same. She would get angry when her parents did not agree or allow her to do what she wanted. To retaliate, this child would not go to school and sit on the computer till late night. It was after one such incident that she refused to give her board exams. Fortunately I was able to convince her to see me at that time. She entered the cabin and said that she was afraid of failing the exams and did not want to appear. Using the wisdom of homoeopathic case taking imparted unto me by my guru Dr. Jayesh Shah, all that I did was ask her to talk about her problems. She wept profusely and expressed everything. The session lasted for an hour and by the end of it she was feeling so much better and now she was confident enough to write her exams.

Using what I learnt in psychiatry during my MD years, I realized it was important to create an environment around her to facilitate expression. I have been listening to her tears, to her smiles, to her lows and to her highs without making any biases or without being judgmental about it and after 3 long years she developed the trust to share her life and her deepest feelings. For parents it is ideal to attend the parenting workshop conducted by Dr. Jayesh Shah.

Monsoon Ailments - An overview

By Dr. Ruchita Shah, B.H.M.S.

The Monsoon Season not only refreshes every living being after dealing with the sizzling heat of summers but even brings diseases along with it. The monsoon is known for bringing with it a host of viral, fungal and bacterial diseases that can range from simple cold and cough [flu] and stomach upsets to major diseases like malaria, dengue, typhoid, gastroenteritis, food poisoning, cholera, jaundice, pneumonia and leptospirosis.

Skin infections caused by bacteria and fungus due to the high moisture content of the air, too abound. While some of these diseases are spread by vectors like mosquitoes, others are either air-borne or spread by infected water and food.

Children tend to fall sick more often during monsoon compared to adults because of low level of immunity. They also play outdoors and thus come in contact with a lot of contaminants. Babies, in the stage of teething, are prone to rotavirus diarrhea, a disease that can turn serious. Often, children top the number of patients hospitalized during monsoon, mainly due to food poisonings and gastroenteritis.

So what is an infection? How does it happen?

When these  harmful (pathognomic)micro- organisms enter our body through food , air and water and start to multiply in number causing injury to our body tissue and produce a disease state causing infection by secreting various harmful toxins in our body. These micro organisms can be viral, bacterial or fungal. Many organisms live in and on our bodies. They are normally harmless or even helpful, but some organisms under certain conditions may cause disease. Some infectious diseases can be passed from person to person. Some however are transmitted via bites from insects or animals. Others are acquired by ingesting contaminated food, water or other contaminated agents in the environment. Each infectious disease has its own specific signs and symptoms.

General signs and symptoms common to many infectious diseases seen during monsoons include:

  • Fever
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle aches
  • Headaches
  • Rash

The most common infectious diseases seen in monsoon are:

  • Typhoid
  • Malaria
  • Dengue
  • Leptospirosis
  • Chikungunya
  • Pneumonia

Wish u all a very happy , enjoyable and a disease free monsoon.

Every time  you eat or drink, you are either feeding disease or fighting it- Heather Morgan

Mediterranean Diet For Rheumatoid Arthritis

Here is information that may help you separate the facts from the myths about diet and rheumatoid arthritis.

Can a Mediterranean Diet Help Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Many studies suggest that a diet high in fruits, vegetables, and vitamin C may be linked to a lower risk of rheumatoid arthritis. In fact, we know that rheumatoid arthritis is less severe in some Mediterranean countries such as Greece and Italy. In those countries, the main diet consists of large amounts of fruits, vegetables and olive oil high in omega-3s. The Mediterranean-type diet may even protect against severe rheumatoid arthritis symptoms.

Fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes are high in phytonutrients. These are chemicals in plants that have disease-fighting properties and immune-boosting antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and the carotenoids. A plant-based diet is also high in bioflavonoids. These are plant compounds that reportedly have anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor activities.

Nutrition researchers who test the antioxidant activity of foods believe that certain foods may reduce the risk of some degenerative diseases associated with aging. These diseases include arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. More recent findings show that the higher intake of omega-3 fatty acids with the Mediterranean diet may be linked to the improvement in rheumatoid arthritis symptoms.

Are Vitamins and Minerals Important for Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Folic acid, or folate, is a B vitamin found in food and is available in supplement form. Folic acid helps the body manufacture red cells. It is important if you take methotrexate, a commonly prescribed medication for rheumatoid arthritis, because folic acid may help you to avoid some of the drug's side effects.

Selenium helps to fight free radicals that cause damage to healthy tissue. Some studies indicate that people with rheumatoid arthritis have reduced selenium levels in their blood. These findings are preliminary and no recommendations have been made for selenium supplementation. One 3.5-ounce serving of tuna gives you a full day's requirement of selenium.

Supplementing your diet with bone-boosting calcium and vitamin D is important, especially if you take corticosteroids (like prednisone) that can cause bone loss. The risk of bone loss is higher in people with rheumatoid arthritis. Check with your doctor to see how much calcium and vitamin D you need to get daily through foods, supplements, and sunlight. Ingesting fewer omega-6 fatty acids and more omega-3 fatty acids, on the other hand, may suppress inflammation and decrease the risk of illness.

Many studies show that lowering the ratio of omega-6 fatty acids to omega-3 fatty acids contained in the diet can reduce the risk of illness. Some plant foods are also sources of omega-3 fatty acids. They include walnuts, tofu, and soybean products, flaxseed and flaxseed oil, and canola oil.

Emphasis on drinking lots of water to prevent the body from going into an acidic mode with exercises is also of utmost benefit.

Excess pounds put extra strain on knees, hips, and other weight-bearing joints, not to mention your heart. Being overweight or obese actually worsens the joints -- making them stiffer and more painful and can exacerbate rheumatoid arthritis flare-ups.

Telemedicine – the virtual way to health

Telemedicine – the virtual way to health

By Dr. Rishi Vyas, MD (Hom)                                      Consulting Homoeopath at the other song clinic

I happened to receive an inquiry few days ago at the other song clinic. A 66 years old male from Muscat had been suffering from lung cancer which had now spread to the other parts of his body. This patient has been receiving chemotherapy and has been advised rest. He cannot travel anywhere. He wished to start homoeopathic medicines. He was encouraged to give the case online and was thus taken up for an online homoeopathic consultation. There was another case of a retired military general from Ludhiana who could not travel out of Ludhiana due to age related difficulties. He had severe prostate related problems. This case too was taken up for online consultation at the other song. It has been two years now that the patient has been taking regular homoeopathic medicines and has improved significantly. With many such experiences, I wish to share an earnest bit of information on telemedicine and its utility in homoeopathy.

Technology has come a long way since the advent of computers and the internet

We have stepped in times of advanced information technology. The use of technology seems to be boundless. There was a time when we had to wait for days to send and receive a letter with few words. Today, the same task can be accomplished in matter of seconds. Technology has seen multiple applications from automation to artificial intelligence. One such application of technology is video conferencing. Video conferencing or video telephony was first introduced in the late 1930’s in Germany in post offices. It has evolved and advanced to be made use of in a variety of fields, medicine being one of them.

The advent and growth of Telemedicine

The use of telemedicine dates as far back as the 1980’s, it is now that it is used frequently and with a lot of ease to treat patients, assist other doctors and train them. Major government and private institutions in India and abroad use telemedicine. As video chatting is only a finger’s click away now-a-days, the world has become a small place in the virtual sense. The experts can now provide consultation to remote villages and communities through primary healthcare centers.

The application of telemedicine in Homoeopathy

What does a homoeopath need to treat a patient? An accurate history and observations. All of this can be accessed with ease on a video call. It is nothing short of a herculean task and often impossible for an individual in a far off place, not able to travel or perhaps suffering from a debilitating illness and not able to physically visit a doctor. An online case consultation is a boon for such a patient. It can be done in real time. It is a time saving and an economic option for patients staying abroad. One doesn’t have to travels thousands of kilometers to receive homoeopathic treatment.

Frequently asked questions related to online homoeopathic consultation

Q - Are there any prerequisites for an online consultation?
A – A good internet connection is required as a lot about the patient can be known through observation. Also, at the other song, we provide a case record form which asks you about your details prior to the consultation. The patient must mail the investigations for the doctor to have a comprehensive understanding of the case at hand.

Q – How does one get physically examined?
A – One may have a parallel assessment and examination from a doctor present in your immediate vicinity.

Q – What should be done in case of an emergency?
A – Keep your homoeopathic doctor informed but also see your local physician. Need be, use the emergency medical services.

Q – How does the patient receive medicines?
A – The patient need to follow up at least 2-3 days before the medicine stock is over. The medicines are then couriered to the patient’s home. In case of emergencies, we give the name and potency of the medicines and ask for a close follow up.

Menstruation Foods and Healthy Diet Plan

MENSTRUATION FOODS and HEALTHY DIET PLAN  - by Mehar Panjwani, Dietician

Diet plays a large role in determining hormonal and menstrual health. If your body is depleted in nutrients, you will have a difficult time maintaining balance both physically and emotionally.

The following dietary guidelines are ideal for continuing well being for all women, but particularly  for those who suffer from any menstrual problem  including premenstrual syndrome (PMS), endometriosis and dysmenorrhea, fibroids, cysts, PID and an irregular cycle.  As a general guideline, you need to give yourself at least three months on your new diet to allow for any health changes.

To begin with one must lay more emphasis on whole foods and minimally processed foods. Examples of whole foods are brown rice rather than white rice, brown flour rather than white flour; also consume more organically produced food with the greatest possible variety. Particularly good ones for women with menstrual problems are root veggies and the dark green leafy varieties. Make fresh vegetables the mainstay of your diet. Legumes: These include lentils, kidney beans, adzuki beans, chick peas, haricot beans, lima beans, black-eyed beans, black beans, split peas, seeds, nuts and seasonal fruits should be taken in plenty;  as they area good source of vitamins and fiber. All these go in into your diet will ensure adequate intake of vitamin B6, vitamin E, magnesium and potassium Oils. Try and use unrefined oils. Olive (virgin only), safflower and sesame are the best for every day use. Avoid (hydrogenated) versions you find in supermarkets.

Essential fatty acids (EFAs). Essential for good health, EFAs are particularly important for women with menstrual problems.

We need them for the formation of the "friendly" prostaglandins that help to ease cramping. Particularly rich sources of EFAs are flaxseed (linseed), evening primrose, .Tofu (paneer Made from soy beans milk) is again highly desired in the diet. Last but not the least water is also a necessary part of the diet as it flushes toxins from the body. Thus preventing premenstrual headaches which have a lot to do with dehydration so take lots of soups or blenderized not strained vegetable juices.

Besides following the diet practices, it is also important that you avoid alcohol and smoking. Spicy foods, caffeinated drinks, refined and processed foods are better avoided as well. Salt and sugar intake should also be cut down.  try to keep your soul happy and cheerful  via meditation so all the downpour of the good hormones refresh ,energise and empower the body.

Above all be in gratitude to divinity always and   implementing on all of the above mentioned dietary guidelines in addition to some daily practice of exercises like brisk walking, weight training etc will help regularize the secretion of all the hormones responsible for menstruation thereby minimizing the menstrual disorders.

Do not fear, when homoeopathy is here!

Do not fear, when homoeopathy is here!

By Dr Devang Shah, MD (Hom)
Consulting Homoeopath at the other song clinic

Through this article I wish to bring some awareness to the readers that there is a lot of scope in complementary and alternative therapies like homoeopathy and you can certainly do away with the surgical knife in a lot of cases.

This is one such case, where a lady aged 35 years was being treated under my care for hypothyroidism. During the course of treatment, she developed an infection of the right great toe with pus. Her toe appeared like this.

Before

She immediately consulted a surgeon out of concern. The surgeon advised antibiotics. If it did not resolve, then it might need a small surgery to drain the pus. Scared of surgical intervention, she asked if homoeopathy could be of help. I said yes! Absolutely! Homoeopathy can be of great help in such conditions. Her symptoms were noted carefully and she was prescribed a homoeopathic medicine for 3 days. She reported after 5 days. Her toe had now completely healed.

After

Times and again, homoeopathy has proved its effectiveness in abscesses, corns, in growing toe nail and many other surgical cases. Unfortunately, patients opt for homoeopathic medicines either because of fear of surgery or on trial and error basis. In my experience there are many cases where modern medicine only has surgery as an option, however if not all, homoeopathy can still help many of them.

Homoeopathy not only addresses the patient’s main problem but it addresses the entire individual. The only side effect of taking homoeopathy is that it helps in building the immunity of the individual by addressing the human being as whole.
