Despite of best of efforts made by parents, it is difficult to get everything right with children. Doctors often receive complaints of children not listening, becoming introvert, fearful, not studying etc. here we need to understand if the child’s behavior is causing any harm to the people around it, to itself or it lies a small area which called as a ‘no problem zone’.
Let me share the case of a teenage girl who was brought to the other song for homoeopathic consultation to treat physical illnesses. This case was difficult as there was little to nothing that this girl shared with me. I had to rely on the mother’s observation to treat this case. Given my warm and welcoming nature, my patients often share a lot with me. But in 8 years of practice, this was one of the few times that it was next to impossible to get any information from a patient. But the good part was that after a long wait of three years, she started sharing in bits and pieces her thoughts and emotions. Her physical complaints got better but her state of mind remained the same. She would get angry when her parents did not agree or allow her to do what she wanted. To retaliate, this child would not go to school and sit on the computer till late night. It was after one such incident that she refused to give her board exams. Fortunately I was able to convince her to see me at that time. She entered the cabin and said that she was afraid of failing the exams and did not want to appear. Using the wisdom of homoeopathic case taking imparted unto me by my guru Dr. Jayesh Shah, all that I did was ask her to talk about her problems. She wept profusely and expressed everything. The session lasted for an hour and by the end of it she was feeling so much better and now she was confident enough to write her exams.
Using what I learnt in psychiatry during my MD years, I realized it was important to create an environment around her to facilitate expression. I have been listening to her tears, to her smiles, to her lows and to her highs without making any biases or without being judgmental about it and after 3 long years she developed the trust to share her life and her deepest feelings. For parents it is ideal to attend the parenting workshop conducted by Dr. Jayesh Shah.

"Listening is such a simple act. It requires us to be present, and that takes practice, but we don't have to do anything else. We don't have to advise, or coach, or sound wise. We just have to be willing to sit there and listen." - Margaret J. Wheatley
Dr. Devang Shah graduated from D.S. Homoeopathic Medical College and has been practicing homoeopathy for the last 8 years. He feels blessed to have studied under Dr. Rajan Sankaran, Dr. Jayesh Shah, Dr. Sunil Anand, Dr. Dinesh Chauhan, Dr. Sujit Chatterjee and Dr Mahesh Gandhi. His goal in each case is to reach to the depth of it and locate the root from where the branches of disease originate. He has been known among his colleagues and clients to have immense ability to be patient and unearth the disturbance within each suffering soul. "Silence is the opening of an infinite world within each of us. May we reach the depth so that the spirit arises?"
