Treatment of Tongue Cancer with Homoeopathy

Case of tongue cancer treated by Dr. Sujit Chatterjee with Homoeopathy 

       Tongue cancer is a type of oral cancer that forms in the front two-thirds of the tongue. Cancer that forms in the back one third of the tongue is considered a type of head and neck cancer. 
Tongue cancer usually develops in the squamous cells, the thin, flat cells that cover the surface of the tongue. 

Common tongue cancer symptoms 

       Symptoms of tongue cancer are very similar to symptoms of other types of oral cancer. It can often be mistaken for a cold that won’t go away, or a persistent sore in the mouth. Other tongue cancer symptoms and signs may include: 

• Persistent tongue and/or jaw pain
• A lump or thickening in the inside of the mouth
• A white or red patch on the gums, tongue, tonsil, or lining of the mouth
• A sore throat or feeling that something is caught in the throat that does not go away
• Difficulty swallowing or chewing
• Difficulty moving the jaw or tongue

       A 48 year old male patient was offered consultation at ‘the other song’ by Dr. Sujit Chatterjee in May 2012. He was diagnosed  with grade 2 squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue with metastasis to the neighboring lymph nodes.

       The patient was very much concerned about saving the tongue and was advised surgery by an onco-surgeon which would result in loss of speech. 

       The patient had undergone 4 cycles of chemotherapy along with 29 cycles of radiation with no significant change in the tumor mass.

       On examination it was found that more than half of the tongue was ulcerated, inflamed, disfigured. 

       The patient experienced tremendous pain while eating, which was aggravated while swallowing the food. The pain radiated to the ears and head. The food would also tend to get stuck on the tongue on account of the ulcer. 

       In homoeopathic practice it is important to explore the patient’s medical, psychological and social history. A full and complete assessment is created and a commonality of symptoms developed. A homoeopathic remedy can then be selected based on the common thread arising from the overall assessment or case taking.

       In the patient’s history, it was found he had constant anxiety about his finances and future. The patient also had a lot of grief about the death of his father who was a major support to him. He was very concerned about the welfare of his family.

       After taking into consideration all of the above factors a remedy was prescribed. 

Follow up:

       The tumor had completely disappeared. The MRI report dated 08-12-2012 showed no obvious residual/ recurrent mass detected. 

       The patient was much better overall. His appetite has increased and he is able to eat well. He also gets sound sleep.

       The oncologist opined there was very good control over the disease.

       In this case along with chemotherapy and radiotherapy, homeopathic medicine played a important role to boost the vitality of the patient and to remove all side effects of chemotherapy and radiation.
