Hope Is Better Than Despair - World AIDS Day 2016

World AIDS day 2016

HIV/AIDS fact sheet

      1. More than 35 million people around the globe are living with HIV.
      2. 30 million have died worldwide since its recognition in 1981.
      3. Patients die more often due to catching infectious diseases like tuberculosis and cancers like Kaposi’s sarcoma and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma rather than the HIV infection itself being the cause of death.

How does HIV spread?

      1. By sexual contact.
      2. By transfusion of infected blood.
      3. By sharing needles and syringes containing infected blood.
      4. From HIV infected mother to her baby

What are the signs and symptoms?

      1. History of unprotected sex.
      2. Early signs of HIV infection are similar to a flu-like illness the symptoms being body ache, fever, sore throat and swollen lymph glands in the neck. This happens within a month or two of getting infected.
      3. The latent phase of infection may last for up to 10 years when one may have persistently swollen lymph nodes.
      4. One starts suffering from fever, weight loss, swollen lymph glands, oral fungal infection and herpes zoster with further multiplication of the virus inside the body.
      5. AIDS is the stage of illness when the immune system is severely damaged. This is the time when one suffers from opportunistic infections like tuberculosis.

How is it diagnosed?

      1. Blood is tested for HIV antibodies.
      2. CD4 count to gauge the immunity status
      3. Specific tests for opportunistic infections.
      4. HIV viral load.

Role of Social Support and coping with the illness

      1. Learning that one has a terminal illness can be a devastating experience. Thus, social support plays a vital role in helping the patient deal with this stress.
      2. Stay happy and in company of people.
      3. Help others and become part of social support groups. Often a sense of purpose in life alleviates the pain and helps dealing with the illness in a better way.

Diet in HIV

      1. Eat nutritious food so that the body gets all the right nutrition to remain healthy.
      2. Cook the food well before consuming to prevent food borne infection.
      3. Avoid street side food.

Homoeopathy and HIV

      1. Homoeopathy helps in improving overall resistance and immunity of the Individual.
      2. Homoeopathy can also help transform the state of mind of the patient from despair to hope.
